I just read the final edit manuscript of Dena Hankins' debut novel Blue Water Dreams and I just have to say; what a brilliant new talent this incredible young author is. Her characters are likable and intelligent with flaws and passions that are real and intense. Dena's grasp of the English language is clear and concise with a cutting sense of humor that is a true reflection of her times.
In 1999 at the ripe old age of 23 Dena Hankins bought her first boat , a William Garden designed Sea Wolf, a beautiful old 25 ton, 50 foot, ketch rigged wooden sailing ship that she named S/V Sovereign Nation. Dena has not only sailed the waters of the Pacific Ocean from the sheltered gunk holes of the Puget sound to the rocky cliffs of the Canadian Gulf Islands, In 2001 she sailed Sovereign Nation down the North American coast to the San Francisco Bay, an adventure that took 8 months to travel the 800 nautical miles that should have taken only 6 to 10 days and forever changed her life. In the San Francisco Bay, (while working a full time job as the warehouse Manager for a very successful on-line sex toy company) Dena, learned the fine art of sailing a cruising sailboat. In fact Dena and her partner James explored the entire Northern California coast from the Humboldt Bay to Monterrey as well as the California Delta in the Four Years that they called California home. In 2006 Dena sailed to the Big Island Of Hawaii and proved her salt as a Transpacific Pacific sailor with over 10,000 nautical miles under her belt by the time she completed a year long adventure exploring the Hawaiian archipelago. After making land fall in Hawaii she went to work on her first novel and completed the first manuscript in February of 2007.
Dena Hankins is an accomplished sailor, a passionate writer and an incredible example a woman who not only knows the value of a brilliant life but has the vision to share.
