Bounding Main to Entertain American Troops in Germany

Chicago, IL – June 27, 2008 – The vocal group, Bounding Main, on their first European tour, will be bringing their spirited music to American troops at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany in early August.

“We originally only planned to come out to represent the US at an international maritime music festival, called Festival Maritim, in Germany,” said group member David Yondorf. “This was quite an honor by itself! Then we got wind of an effort to send music CDs to the troops and we thought ‘hey, we’re going to be right by the hospital, let’s bring them a live performance.’”

Music director Jon Krivitzky took over the organization of the European tour. After months of corresponding with various agencies from the American Army, Air Force and Navy he secured shows at Spangdahlem Air Base as well as at Landstuhl. “Landstuhl is the largest military hospital outside of the continental US, and some of the most serious casualties from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are being treated there. If we can bring a bit of relief to these people and the excellent staff treating them, well, that is the least we can do.”

Group founder, Dean Calin, added, “I thought we should be able to give the troops some tangible memento of our visit, so I gathered several corporate sponsors to support the creation of a commemorative CD just for this trip.” Sponsor David Goudreau, president of Northern Wings Repair and former US Marine aviator, said, “This group is doing it right. They’re giving support in just the right way to lift the spirits of our G.I.s.”

Bounding Main singer Gina Dalby, said, "It is important to us that we do our part to make sure
that our troops know they are appreciated by the people they’re protecting and that they are in our thoughts.” Gina wrote the dedication on the commemorative CD which reads, in part:

“Bounding Main proudly dedicates this limited edition CD to all those that serve in the United States military. Know that we are proud of each of you, every day, and that you and your service are always in our thoughts. There is no better time in history or better place in the world to live than right now in the United States of America.”

Christie Dalby, another singer in the group, and sister to Gina, added, “we are collecting sponsorships, corporate and individual, to help defer the cost of producing and shipping these CD's that include
handwritten notes from the individual sponsors. We are calling it Operation Share the Shanties.”

Fan liaison Maggie Hannington worked closely with fellow performers in Europe to secure additional appearances, including a radio interview in The Netherlands and appearances at folk clubs. “We are wildly excited to be able to reach a whole new European audience.”

Bounding Main has been performing together for over five years. Many of their songs are classified as "sea shanties" - tunes sung by sailors on tall ships. These songs would provide rhythm to labor-intensive tasks such as winding the anchor chain, raising the sail, or pumping water of out the hold. “They are the original team-building exercises,” said Christie Dalby. “While our shows are a lot of fun and are very popular with our fans, we respect the fact that their origins come from men laboring under difficult circumstances. We think this ties in very well with the missions of our military today.”

Bounding Main is based between Chicago and Milwaukee and performs sea shanties and nautical ballads at maritime museums, tall ship festivals, music festivals, renaissance faires, on the radio and at pirate-themed venues from their home port in the Western Great Lakes region of the US. They have released three CDs since their founding in January of 2003.
Traditional

On the fourth of July eighteen hundred and six
We set sail from the sweet cove of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the grand city hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft, she was rigged fore-and-aft
And oh, how the wild winds drove her.
She'd got several blasts, she'd twenty-seven masts
And we called her the Irish Rover.

We had one million bales of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of stones
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides,
We had four million barrels of bones.
We had five million hogs, we had six million dogs,
Seven million barrels of porter.
We had eight million bails of old nanny goats' tails,
In the hold of the Irish Rover.

There was awl Mickey Coote who played hard on his flute
When the ladies lined up for his set
He was tootin' with skill for each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his sparse witty talk he was cock of the walk
As he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance when he took up his stance
And he sailed in the Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee from the banks of the Lee,
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Jimmy McGurk who was scarred stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O'Toole who was drunk as a rule
And fighting Bill Tracey from Dover
And your man Mick McCann from the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years when the measles broke out
And the ship lost it's way in a fog.
And that whale of the crew was reduced down to two,
Just meself and the captain's old dog.
Then the ship struck a rock, oh Lord what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around, and the poor dog was drowned
I'm the last of the Irish Rovers
Great news! Our final Deport Bounding Main event will be in the same building as the hilarious duo, MooNiE and BrooN. The great MooNiE himself will be gracing our humble stage, bringing his peculiar brand of comedic skills to wow the crowd. In return, Bounding Main will open for each of MooNiE and BrooN's performances with a couple tunes to warm up the crowd. It'll be the coolest thing since we opened for the 80's hair band Slaughter back in 2004 (true story!).

We welcome MooNiE and BrooN fans to our event and we strongly encourage you, our faithful fans, to buy tickets to see their show either before or after ours. If you've never seen these guys perform before, you've got to see what you've been missing! You won't be sorry.

We are also very happy to announce that joining us will be the delightful and exotic tribal dance troupe Rakhshanda. We last performed together at last year's Port Washington Pirate festival and they are great artists whose dances you will enjoy! Plus we'll have a silent auction, our final fund-raising effort for the Deport Bounding Main campaign for our European voyage this year!
The event will be at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest Illinois on May 31, 2008 4PM - 8PM. Included in our event will be several fundraising efforts, including a silent auction and Operation Share the Shanties. For more information on our show and on MooNiE and BrooN's shows, head to www.gortoncenter.org/, www.moonieandbroon.com/, www.rakhshanda.com/ or of course, www.boundingmain.com. And while our show is free you can get tickets to the MooNie & BrooN Show through their website.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Celebrate Black History Month all through February. African Americans have
played a major role in our maritime history. From the earliest days of our
nation to modern times, African Americans built, crewed, and captained
ships, fought in naval battles, invented shipboard tools, and helped
develop maritime music. We invite you to visit and take part in these
family programs:

African Americans in the Maritime Trades

SMALL BOAT SHOP UPDATE
Small craft curators Bill Doll, John Muir, and Jason Rucker, along with
volunteers, are putting the finishing touches on the restoration of the
Bear class boat Merry Bear's topside deck, and is getting her interior
built out. In addition, the park's new work boat is getting her final
fittings. Both are on display in the Small Boat Shop for you to view, watch
the work, and talk with curators and volunteers.

BALCLUTHA UPDATE
Winter work mode means chasing down deck leaks between rain storms and
regular checking of mooring and gangway. Rigging crewmember Chris Jannini
reports that the ongoing big projects are installation of a new fore
t'gallant/royal mast, and replacement/installation of anti-slip treads on
all of the ladders. You can view the mast, under construction, in the lower
(auto) deck of the ferry Eureka. Come down and watch the rigging crew and
volunteers work at traditional methods of of shipboard maintenance., We
also offer daily guided tours at 2:15, where you can discover daily life
aboard this 19th-century Cape Horner.

C.A. THAYER REHABILITATION UPDATE
This 1895-built lumber schooner returned to Hyde Street Pier in 2007 after
an extended drydocking to rebuild her hull. 20% of her older timbers were
saved and rebuild of her deckhouses will soon be getting underway, as we
await the delivery of new lumber. The principle behind her rehabilitation
is that anything removed due to rot is documented and replaced with new
wood, to be fitted exactly the same. This insures the integrity of her
historic design. Currently, the interior of the aft deckhouse has been
documented and removed. Late spring anticipates complete coating: topsides
painted, including rails and waterways, and deck oiled. Watch for further
monthly updates from her chief shipwright, Phil Erwin. You're invited to
view her rehabilitation and talk with the shipwrights about their work.
They will be glad to answer your questions. The shipwright shop is located
on Hyde Street Pier. Due to safety concerns, the Thayer is not yet open for
self-guided tours. Ranger-led tours, though, are available. Please call the
Visitor Center at 415-447-5000 a few days prior to your visit to find out
when a tour is scheduled.

ALMA UPDATE
Looking ahead to March, the 1891 scow schooner Alma will begin her first
full season of interpretive sails around the bay. You'll be invited to join
in on line hauling, or just have a relaxing sail and learn about San
Francisco's maritime history. For schedules and more information, please
call the Visitor Center at 415-447-5000. Details to follow in furure
newsletters.

AQUATIC PARK BATHHOUSE (MARITIME MUSEUM) RESTORATION UPDATE
The museum is currently closed for major renovation. The first phase of the
project, renovating the roof and windows, is scheduled to be completed this
year, in the late spring. A new elevator is being installed, which will
provide full access to the 3rd floor. Restoration of the bleachers and
underground structure is scheduled to begin this summer. As the bleachers
project gets underway, restoration of the WPA era interior murals in the
lobby of the museum building will begin. In the meantime, plans are
underway to conduct ranger-led tours of the magnificent WPA artwork of the
building's interior and exterior. Hilaire Hiler and Sargent Johnson were
two of the artists on the WPA rolls who helped make this building into an
artistic treasure. Watch for tour schedules in future newsletters. (Please
note that the San Francisco Senior Center, housed in the building, remains
open).

EDUCATION PROGRAM UPDATE: PREPARING YOUTH FOR A CARIBBEAN SAILING VOYAGE
The park, and its cooperating association, the San Francisco Maritime
National Park Association, are bringing to the pier as many young people as
possible, and are very excited to be hosting the girls from the Tall Ship
Education Academy this February, for two-thirds of their 18-week semester.
The first six weeks will be spent in preparation for a six week voyage
aboard a traditionally rigged ship in the Caribbean. The girls will be on
Hyde Street Pier twice a week, engaging in intense classroom study and
physical training. Towards the end of February, they will leave the
classroom and get out on the water in the park's fleet of Pelican small
boats to learn the basics of sailing and seamanship. We look forward to
helping the crew prepare for such an exciting voyage! We will update you on
boatbuilding projects they'll engage in after their return in April. The
friendships, teamwork skills, and self confidence gained from this amazing
experience could last a lifetime.

VOLUNTEERING
Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated. To find out about

I just read the final edit manuscript of Dena Hankins' debut novel Blue Water Dreams and I just have to say; what a brilliant new talent this incredible young author is. Her characters are likable and intelligent with flaws and passions that are real and intense. Dena's grasp of the English language is clear and concise with a cutting sense of humor that is a true reflection of her times.

In 1999 at the ripe old age of 23 Dena Hankins bought her first boat , a William Garden designed Sea Wolf, a beautiful old 25 ton, 50 foot, ketch rigged wooden sailing ship that she named S/V Sovereign Nation. Dena has not only sailed the waters of the Pacific Ocean from the sheltered gunk holes of the Puget sound to the rocky cliffs of the Canadian Gulf Islands, In 2001 she sailed Sovereign Nation down the North American coast to the San Francisco Bay, an adventure that took 8 months to travel the 800 nautical miles that should have taken only 6 to 10 days and forever changed her life. In the San Francisco Bay, (while working a full time job as the warehouse Manager for a very successful on-line sex toy company) Dena, learned the fine art of sailing a cruising sailboat. In fact Dena and her partner James explored the entire Northern California coast from the Humboldt Bay to Monterrey as well as the California Delta in the Four Years that they called California home. In 2006 Dena sailed to the Big Island Of Hawaii and proved her salt as a Transpacific Pacific sailor with over 10,000 nautical miles under her belt by the time she completed a year long adventure exploring the Hawaiian archipelago. After making land fall in Hawaii she went to work on her first novel and completed the first manuscript in February of 2007.
Dena Hankins is an accomplished sailor, a passionate writer and an incredible example a woman who not only knows the value of a brilliant life but has the vision to share.

I truly believe that Denas fantastic adventure of how two people discover each other through discovering their dreams needs to be read so please help her find a publisher for this novel.
Please, if you have any good ideas about where she could go for mass publication please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just e-mail me here with any and all publishing ideas!
Thank you all,

When - To be determined. Micah and I are discussing his calender and if necessary we will decide when is most convenient for him. That said we would like as much input as we can get from those who are interested as to best times for most people. Right now it comes down to one Thursday evening per month or a Saturday or Sunday afternoon per month. At the moment the Black Spot is not open on Sundays but if there is enough interest Micah will open for events.

Needed - Anyone who has an interest in Sea Chanteys or maritime lore to come sing, tell stories, play an instrument - generally act like your sitting around the forecastle between watches.

I have high hopes for this as an old timer who would love to see the maritime tradition of the Cape be better preserved. Any one on who has ideas, suggestions, or comments please post here. I will also be posting information on the related Tribe groups and Myspace forums I know as well as making individual contacts.

Oh, you know us so well. Bounding Main couldn’t possibly, ever, go on an actual cruise so we’re going on a land cruise! And where to? Nowhere water-based, I can tell you that.
How about we do what we do best and get lost? Not Lost at Sea, but rather lost in a corn maze. Nothing says ‘nautical adventure’ like climbing aboard a yellow school bus and heading out to a farm!

Join the crew as we sail along the roadways (instead of the waterways) and travel all the way up to Spring Grove, Illinois, to the Richardson’s Farm! Once there, we’ll get lost in a corn maze by the light of the moon. Oh, did we not mention that? We’re going to navigate the maze in the dark! Ha ha! How’s that for high adventure? After we find our way out (IF we find our way out) we’ll gather ‘round ye old campfire and sing songs and make s’mores. Mmmm, s’mores. None of that salty, rock-hard, tall-ship sailin’ food for us. After a hard night navigating, we’ll want soft marshmallow-y, chocolate-y type food ‘cuz that’s the kind of sailors we are.

Local maritime vocalists singing up a Storm! - Bounding Main performing throughout SE Wisconsin in August

Chicago-Milwaukee -- July 30, 2007 – The popular maritime-themed vocal group, Bounding Main will be performing at three major venues in South-East Wisconsin in August. These costumed singers portraying sailors and ladies from the days of tall ships will be featured musical artists at the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival on August 4th and 5th. They will then appear at the Kenosha Days of Discovery/Tall Ships event on August 12th, giving both strolling performances and a stage show. Finally they will end up at the Bristol Renaissance Faire where they will entertain on August 18th and 19th.

Group member Christie Dalby relates, “We have taken on as many shows as we can possibly handle this year, having entertained at maritime museums, pirate festivals, renaissance faires, music festivals, tall ship festivals, corporate events and house concerts. We are honored that we have been asked to perform for a retirement ceremony at Great Lakes Naval Base at the end of this month. The gentleman retiring was an instructor on base and used to play our music to the cadets – what an amazing affirmation of the appeal of our work together.”

“We seem to really reach our audience with our sound and our stage presence,” said Maggie Hannington, the group’s fan liaison. “We sell our music all over the world, both in the form of CDs and digital downloads through CDBaby, iTunes, Napster and others. We have a steady stream of compliments, not only from the people who hear us, but also from the venues that hire us. We have been asked to perform at Festival Maritim in Bremen Germany next summer, which is quite an honor.”

“We’re currently running a campaign to raise funds for transportation to that event; we’re calling it ‘Deport Bounding Main,’” explained Gina Dalby. Gina has been instrumental in organizing the fund-raiser events, which have so far been very successful. “Go to our web site (http://www.boundingmain.com) and read about the campaign. There are a lot of fun events coming up and we’ll be singing at all of them.”

On top of everything else the group is recording their third CD. “This is very exciting for us, said music director Jon Krivitzky, “as there are several original compositions of our own on this collection, in addition to the traditional maritime tunes that we perform.”

Many of their songs are classified as “sea shanties” - which were tunes sung by sailors on tall ships to provide rhythm to labor-intensive tasks such as winding up the anchor chain, raising sails or pumping water out of the hold. Knowing that other groups perform these songs in an exacting, traditional manner, Bounding Main chose to give the songs a more contemporary sound, adding harmonies and depth, women’s voices and a more theatrical performance.

“I am delighted that we have so many possibilities open for us for the future,” said group founder Dean Calin. “We’re keeping an important part of our history alive through these songs, being only one of a handful of groups in the Midwest that perform this style of music. If we inspire people to learn more about sea shanties or tall ships or the stories that go along with them, then we’ve accomplished something important.”

19th-Century Weapon Found in Whale
By ERIN CONROY, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

(06-12) 15:26 PDT BOSTON, (AP) --
A 50-ton bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt — more than a century ago. Embedded deep under its blubber was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped projectile that has given researchers insight into the whale's age, estimated between 115 and 130 years old.

"No other finding has been this precise," said John Bockstoce, an adjunct curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
Calculating a whale's age can be difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses. It's rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts say the oldest were close to 200 years old.

The bomb lance fragment, lodged a bone between the whale's neck and shoulder blade, was likely manufactured in New Bedford, on the southeast coast of Massachusetts, a major whaling center at that time, Bockstoce said.

It was probably shot at the whale from a heavy shoulder gun around 1890. The small metal cylinder was filled with explosives fitted with a time-delay fuse so it would explode seconds after it was shot into the whale. The bomb lance was meant to kill the whale immediately and prevent it from escaping.

The device exploded and probably injured the whale, Bockstoce said.

"It probably hurt the whale, or annoyed him, but it hit him in a non-lethal place," he said. "He couldn't have been that bothered if he lived for another 100 years."

The whale harkens back to far different era. If 130 years old, it would have been born in 1877, the year Rutherford B. Hayes was sworn in as president, when federal Reconstruction troops withdrew from the South and when Thomas Edison unveiled his newest invention, the phonograph.

The 49-foot male whale died when it was shot with a similar projectile last month, and the older device was found buried beneath its blubber as hunters carved it with a chain saw for harvesting.

"It's unusual to find old things like that in whales, and I knew immediately that it was quite old by its shape," said Craig George, a wildlife biologist for the North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management, who was called down to the site soon after it was found.
The revelation led George to return to a similar piece found in a whale hunted near St. Lawrence Island in 1980, which he sent to Bockstoce to compare.

"We didn't make anything of it at the time, and no one had any idea about their lifespan, or speculated that a bowhead could be that old," George said.

Bockstoce said he was impressed by notches carved into the head of the arrow used in the 19th century hunt, a traditional way for the Alaskan hunters to indicate ownership of the whale.
Whaling has always been a prominent source of food for Alaskans, and is monitored by the International Whaling Commission. A hunting quota for the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission was recently renewed, allowing 255 whales to be harvested by 10 Alaskan villages over five years.

After it is analyzed, the fragment will be displayed at the Inupiat Heritage Center in Barrow, Alaska.

THE MARITIME traditions of early 19th-century America will sail into the Richmond Marina on Friday for a four-day stay, and "all law-abiding and loyal citizens" are invited to experience what it was like during the days when privateers sailed the high seas.

The Lynx, a 122-foot square topsail schooner meant to replicate a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812, will fire a cannon salute when it docks at 3 p.m. at Marina Bay Yacht Harbor, 1340 Marina Way South in Richmond.

The ship, complete with a crew dressing and performing duties as they would have almost 200 years ago, will offer tours to the public from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Admission is free Friday and $5 for adults (ages 12 and younger free) Saturday. The vessel also will be available for schools, groups and private charters from April 30 to May 2.

The Lynx, which was hired to train the cast and crew for the Disney "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, is a living history classroom. It offers a look at not only the nautical past and the nation's history but also the science and skills that sailors needed to operate a ship two centuries ago. It also provides a look at the days of the privateers, which were private ships authorized by the government to attack foreign shipping in time of war.

The tall ship, which is owned and operated by the Lynx Educational Foundation, is outfitted with cannons, pennants and flags true to the era of 1812, when the United States augmented its Navy by enlisting private ships in its war with England.

Those who want the full experience of a vintage ship in action can take part in one of the interactive sailing adventures that will be offered during the Lynx's stay or book a berth when it sails from Richmond to Rio Vista on May 3 and 4.

The ship that I was building in Kona Hawaii has been turned over to a "Pre-Form" manufacturing company in Los Angeles, California. As a matter of fact the Kona Coffee and Tea company has deemed the entire project too exspencive and sold the land that the Museum was being built on to a very cheesy company called Hilo Hatties!
So there will be no Coffee and Tea Museum in Hawaii and there will be no beautiful ship built in that non-existent museum.
I would like to thank all of the people that hooked me up with shiprites and boat builders from all over the United States.
As for me,
I am now working for the Mahalo Deep Sea Water Project located at the Natural Energy Laboratories in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
I couldn't just turn over all the work I put into that project to a company that was going to turn it into shit!
Even though I love boat building and museum exhibit design I also love Natural Energy research and development so back to the sciences I go...
Thankfully the crew was all safe and sound (including the parrotts and dog). She needs help and in the message below is a link to where anyone that can help with a donation can send it. Please take a moment to read this.

I'm posting this here so that more can pass it on...

At the time of this writing, Royaliste is still aground and the captain and
crew are still working to free her. Gary and Kathy Bergman, the
owners/captains lived aboard full-time and have lost nearly everything that
was aboard. Insurance coverage on a vessel of this type only covers
liability, so as I understand it, absolutely none of this is to be covered
by the ship's insurance. Gary and Kathy are faced with the tremendous
financial burden. In addition to the initial recovery of the ship, they will
be faced with haul-out costs, repair and replacement costs not to mention
the costs of hotel rooms, clothing and personal care items.
The Royaliste operates as a non-profit and she desperately needs the
assistance of everyone who can make a donation to help with her recovery. No
donation would be too small or too large and every donation is greatly
appreciated. Please spread the word of her difficulties to anyone who can
help.
Donations can be made through the Privateer Inc website support page:
The PayPal link is up and can be accessed here:
http://www.privateerinc.org/support.cfm
News of the Royaliste is being kept up to date on the Tales of the Seven
Seas website forum. My husband Bob was serving aboard as crew when she went
aground and has the only surviving cell phone. He is keeping me updated with
information and I'm posting it immediately on the website as it comes in. Up
to the minute information can be viewed here:
http://talesofthesevenseas.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=9911
Royaliste has long served the pirate community. Gary and Kathy have been
extraordinarily generous with Royaliste for many years. They have made her
easily accessible to anyone that expressed a desire to learn the art of
sailing a tall ship. Now this beautiful ship needs our help. Please spread
the word and share this information with anyone and everyone who can help
her.

My name is James Lane and I am the Director of Aesthetics for the Kona Coffee and Tea Company in Kona Hawaii. We are building a new museum/gallery dedicated to the history of the coffee and tea industry in the Pacific Islands. As a part of the museum I have been given the incredible task of building a beautiful fully rigged 65 foot Hermaphrodite Brig inside the gallery! This wonderful vessel will be appropriately named "Ha'aheo o Aloha" or Pride of Aloha. I have been a boat and ship builder for a little over 30 years but of course I've never built a ship inside a 55,000 square foot building before, this is a first for me. I need to know where I can get all of the traditional rigging for this project. I know that I will most likely have to go to more then one vender but the fewer the better.
Please help if you can by giving me any ideas, links or just thoughts off the tops of your knoggins...
With respect,

I would love to connect with others from these organizations, but would also love to hear from some of you who have worked for others, so we can cross-pollinate (woo-hoo! lol).
